"Toby and Shesh" swinging his muzzle towards Shesh. Approaching the fallen tree a sense of warm welcoming befell Toby, somewhat excited he had found a new home yet with a sting of anxiety at the uncertainty of his future, not to great a sting to dismay him at the moment, for now he was looking forward to resting on the soft earth. Gently he folded his legs beneath him and lay his head on his forepaws. A small "Thank you" escaped him before his eyes commanded sleep to take the reins. Though sleep took control, his fears came out to play along with their friends. A turn here, across this river, just over that fence, under the shelter of ragged roots still he could hear them calling him, angry gunfire polluting the air screaming for his hide. Dogs closing in, his legs powerless. Those merciless jaws promptly stabbed him back into reality in a dazed panic. Pumped with adreniline he stodd, desperatley surveying the area, where were they? All he could see were Shesh and Blackthorn sleeping peacefully, seemed he hadn't woken them, slowly he lay back down, fighting sleep off just that little bit longer until he could no longer stay awake. Hoping this time sleep would be more merciful.

Blackthorn's sleep was rough and broken and dreamless. Why, she hadn't slept deeply in years! Every little noise in the undergrowth; the leaf-litter scrunching as a mouse nosed for insects, the flap of a pigeon's wings in the trees, the buzz of a fly next to her ear; made her open her eyes and look around for danger, alert and ready to run. She couldn't help it!
In the end, Blackthorn gave up trying to sleep, rising up and padding slowly along, looking for something to eat. She was hungry, but knew that in the heat of midday, it would be too hot to go hunting, so instead she searched for tidbits. After much sniffing and looking, she snaffled up a few bird's eggs tucked amonst the briars in a little ground nest, going on to take a few rich-coloured berries hanging like jewels of blood on a bush. Satiated a little, Blackthorn tried to sleep again, but she felt uneasy. Whether it was for herself, or for her new companions, she couldn't tell. Once more, she got to her feet and sat on a mossy rock, looking out for danger.

Dawn rose slowly but trumphantly into the sleepy sky. Birds singng their morning choruses to drive the night away from the forest's residents. Standing up slightly wobbling anyone would think Toby was fighting halfheartedly against sleep. His stomach however won over all, time to go find something to eat. Slowly he started the shake that would ripple right down to his tail until he was fully awake. Ears swivelling trying to find a noise worth following he noticed Blackthorn perched again like a statue, a statue not showing any inckling that she was at all hungry but then again since when do statues eat? A low little thud noises could be heard faintly withing the forest, he held his nose up inhailing deeply-Rabbit, a few of them from the sound of it too. Hunger propted onwards, he glanced back at sleeping Shesh, not at all disturbed by the birds or hunger, well not yet anyway Toby thought. Softly padding towards the noise, anticipation threw itself into the mix. Smells getting stronger and a flash of a cotton tail he couldn't help but do a little jump of excitement, luckally nothing in the forest snitched on him to his breakfast. Eyes focused, ears poised, tail twitching he lay in wait for what seemed forever would of probably only been 2 minutes, a flash of brown ran across infront, obviously they had caught a whiff of his scent the way he had came and thought to run in the opposite direction, obviously this had been a faital error, too late to tell him that though now that he lay limp in Toby's slobbering jaws. He trotted off happily before a memory struck him, Shesh would be hungry too and now that the rabbits had smelt him he couldn't catch another, not yet anyway. Shaking it off he trotted back to the old tree and dropped the rabbit next to Shesh, he could always find something else to eat, hunger could wait a while.

Blackthorn peered over her shoulder, amused, even a little impressed as Toby sped after the rabbits. How had this dog-creature learnt to hunt like that? Perhaps she'd underestimated him. He didn't smell rabid, anyway, so she assumed he was just good at hunting. He'd come in useful if they were going to go hunting sometime. The lure of large prey made Blackthorn drool a little-- a nice steaming slab of fresh elk meat would go down nicely after years of eating scraps and tidbits. Not that she would be much help in bringing it down in her state. Come to think of it, what use was she-- an old, rotting, carcass of a beast, unable to hunt, too slow to keep up? Blackthorn curled her lip and shook away those thoughts. Come on old girl! Dis has been slithering in your shadow for a long while, and he still hasn't got you! she muttered to herself. Keep going, Blackthorn. Kenna would have wanted it. Keep going until the earth swallows you up! Talking to herself had kept the old she-wolf sane for a while now, and she was finding it hard to kick the habit and talk to others for a change. Perhaps it was time to start. Shesh was still sleeping, so Blackthorn wandered over to Toby and lay down under a thick silver-barked tree covered in ivy. She washed her paws and sniffed the air, feeling a little uncomfortable. What to say? Finally, she gave a little cough and said: That was skilful hunting Toby. Ever hunted large prey?
